Demonstrate flexible C1 communication

C1 End-of-Level Diagnostic

Use this after all C1 lessons. The check combines precise language choices with interpretation, listening, argument, reformulation, and independent production.

Benchmark goal

The learner should understand demanding extended input, recognize implied meaning, express ideas fluently and flexibly, and produce clear, well-structured language with controlled register and cohesion.

Confirm C1 when ready

  • Controls aspect, stance, emphasis, reduction, and information structure for meaning.
  • Interprets qualification, connotation, implication, and relationships across extended discourse.
  • Sustains nuanced speech and writing while reformulating and responding to challenge.

C1 requires converging evidence: precise choices, inference in extended input, and independent speaking and writing.

1. Control viewpoint, stance, and information structure

Narrative viewpoint

Before the call began, Maya expected a routine update. The unexpected resignation changed how she understood the meeting.

Until the director spoke, Maya ___ a routine update.

Implied mixed conditional

The evidence was not conclusive. That is why the panel is requesting another trial now.

Which sentence makes the unreal relationship explicit?

Negative and restrictive inversion

The error did not become apparent during the first review. It became apparent after the second review.

Choose the accurate emphatic version.

Advanced modal stance

A reporting change is a credible explanation, but the available evidence does not prove it.

Which sentence expresses a strong possibility without claiming certainty?

Participle clause

The analyst reviewed the full dataset first. She then revised her own conclusion.

Choose the concise sentence with a clear understood subject.

Reduced relative clause

The rule applies to applications that are received after Friday.

Choose the accurate reduced form.

Nominalization

The committee rejected the proposal. The researchers were surprised. The actor must remain visible.

Which nominalized version preserves responsibility?

Cleft structure

The missing explanation, not the reported figures, is the writer’s focus.

Choose the sentence that places that gap in focus.

Concession and counterargument

You want to acknowledge a serious limitation and then defend a proportionate next step.

Which pair makes that relationship clear?

Collocation and lexical precision

The evidence is strong and persuasive, but it supports another trial rather than immediate permanent adoption.

Choose the most precise natural sentence.

2. Read for stance, implication, and cohesion

What can a four-day trial actually tell us?

A software company recently reported that productivity rose during a six-month four-day-workweek trial. Employees completed roughly the same number of projects while taking fewer sick days, and most described their concentration as better. The result appears encouraging, particularly because customer satisfaction did not decline.

It would be premature, however, to treat the trial as proof that a shorter week suits every organization. The company postponed two major launches during the study, and its teams already had considerable control over their schedules. Those conditions may have made the transition unusually manageable. Nor does stable project output show whether employees compressed the same pressure into fewer days.

The strongest conclusion is therefore narrower than either supporters or critics may prefer. The trial demonstrates that reduced working time can be compatible with stable output under some conditions. A larger comparison should examine workload, retention, service quality, and employee well-being across different sectors before policymakers infer a universal effect.

Overall stance

Which statement best represents the writer’s position?

Qualification

Why does the writer mention schedule control and postponed launches?

Implied meaning

What concern is implied by “compressed the same pressure into fewer days”?

Reference across discourse

What does “The strongest conclusion” refer to?

3. Listen for qualification, reformulation, and recommendation

Listen: program review

Play the review. Which summary preserves the speaker’s final position?

Listen: policy response

Play the response. What position does the speaker ultimately take?

Reformulation

A listener has misunderstood your abstract claim. You need to restate it more clearly without changing the claim.

Which response performs that discourse job?

Phrasal verb and register

The measure will be discontinued in stages, and the sentence belongs in a professional update.

Choose the natural accurate wording.

4. Teacher-scored independent communication

Speaking task · 5 points

Policy review meeting: Choose a complex change relevant to work, education, technology, housing, transportation, or public health. Present a recommendation, acknowledge a serious objection, respond to two challenges, and reformulate one point after the tutor deliberately misunderstands it.

Award one point for each ability demonstrated independently or after one light prompt.

Writing task · 5 points

Write a nuanced recommendation of 280–340 words. Address a complex professional, academic, or public issue. Establish the question, distinguish evidence from inference, compare two responses, acknowledge a substantial counterargument, and recommend a revisable course of action.

Award one point for each observable quality.
