Vocabulary · Lesson 6

Technology & devices: report what you can observe

Useful technology English identifies the device or service, the action attempted, the observable symptom, and the scope of the problem. It asks for a safe next step without guessing a technical cause or exposing private account information.

NoticeFind six information jobs in one support request.
DiscoverSeparate hardware, software, connection, account, and file language.
BuildChoose exact actions, symptoms, scope, and safe responses.
UseGive a fictional support report without private data.

Can-do: By the end, you can distinguish a device from an app, account, network, and file; distinguish downloading from installing, uploading, saving, and backing up; place pronouns accurately in common technology phrasal verbs; report what will not open, load, connect, charge, or play; state when and where a problem occurs; ask for a safe next step; and refuse requests for passwords or verification codes.

Two-minute retrieval

Three earlier patterns

Use present continuous for the action now, a base-verb imperative for the instruction, and present perfect for the completed save with a result now.

1The progress bar is moving right now: The laptop the update right now.
2The support note gives a direct instruction with no subject: the file from the official course page.
3The save is complete, so the document is protected before restart: Maya the document, so it is safe to restart the app.

Notice six jobs in one support request

Harbor Learning support message

“I’m using a shared Windows laptop in the training room. I opened the Harbor Learning website and selected Upload, but the progress bar stays at 0 percent. The problem started at 10:15. Other websites open on this laptop, and the same file uploads from the office tablet. The page says ‘Upload failed. Try again.’ What should I try next?”

  • Which phrase identifies the device and location? Which phrase reports the attempted action?
  • Which parts report the symptom, time, scope, and exact message?
  • Does the writer diagnose the cause, or ask for a next step?

Discovery check: identify each information job

1A shared Windows laptop in the training room gives the .
2Opened the website and selected Upload gives the .
3The progress bar stays at 0 percent gives the .
4At 10:15 gives the problem’s .
5The facts that other sites open and the file uploads from another device provide a .
6Upload failed. Try again. gives the .

Get to the root: name the technology layer

My computer is broken is often too broad. First identify which layer has the visible problem.

layeruseful nounsexample report
hardware device or partlaptop, phone, screen, keyboard, charger, headphonesThe keyboard does not respond.
app or softwareapp, browser, program, updateThe video app will not open.
connection or networkWi-Fi network, mobile data, Bluetooth connectionThe laptop cannot connect to this Wi-Fi network.
account or accessaccount, username, password, verification codeI can open the site, but I cannot log in to my account.
file or locationfile, document, photo, folder, link, pageThe file is in Downloads, but it will not open.

Report the symptom before diagnosing the cause. The page will not load is observable. The router is broken is a diagnosis that may be wrong. A helper can ask about other pages, devices, networks, times, or accounts to narrow the scope.

Keep the action and result distinct

actionmeaningdifferent action
download a filetransfer it from an online location to this deviceupload a file transfers it from this device to an online location
download an appreceive its installation file or packageinstall the app makes the software ready to use
save the documentstore the current changesback up the document keeps a separate recovery copy
restart the deviceshut it down and start it againreset the device changes settings and may erase information
connect to Wi-Fijoin a networkpair the headphones creates a Bluetooth relationship between devices
mute the microphonestop its sound from being sentturn off the microphone may disable the device or feature completely

Restart and reset are not synonyms. Save work first, then restart only when the device, app, official support, or workplace policy permits it. Do not reset a device merely because a restart was suggested.

Drill 1: choose the exact action

1The report is on the official course site, and Maya needs a copy on her laptop: She should the report.
2Leo has a photo on his phone and needs to add it to the class portal: He should the photo.
3The app package is already on the laptop, but the app is not ready to open: Maya still needs to the app.
4Before changing the laptop, Leo needs a separate recovery copy of the project folder: He should the project folder.
5Official support says to shut down and start the laptop again without changing its settings: Maya should the laptop after saving her work.
6The new Bluetooth headphones and phone have never been connected to each other: Leo needs to the headphones with his phone.

Place the object inside the correct chunk

Some phrasal verbs are separable. A noun can follow the whole chunk or sit in the middle: turn on the laptop or turn the laptop on. A pronoun must sit in the middle: turn it on, not turn on it.

Other combinations keep their preposition with the following noun: log in to your account, connect to the network, search for the file. Do not apply the pronoun rule from turn it on to every verb with a small word.

structurenatural example
separable verb + nounplug in the charger · plug the charger in
separable verb + pronounplug it in · turn it off
verb + fixed preposition + nounlog in to the portal · connect to Wi-Fi · search for the document
send + person + thingsend me the link
send + thing + to + personsend the link to me

Drill 2: complete the whole chunk

1The laptop is off, and it replaces the laptop: Please .
2The normal, undamaged charger is beside the laptop, and it replaces the charger: Please .
3Maya wants to enter the official course account: She needs to the official course account.
4The laptop needs to join the named Harbor Guest network: It needs to the Harbor Guest network.
5Leo cannot find the document in the folder: He should the document by its exact filename.
6The speaker wants the link, with the person directly after send: Could you the official link?

Report the symptom and scope before the solution

observable symptomuseful scope or time detail
The laptop will not turn on.The charging light is also off.
The screen is frozen. The pointer has not moved for two minutes.
The page will not load.Other pages load on the same device.
There is no sound in the call.Music plays normally in another app.
The battery is not charging. It has stayed at 12 percent for twenty minutes.
I cannot log in.The page says “Password incorrect,” but I will not share my password.

In problem reports, will not or won’t can mean that a device or app fails or refuses to perform an action: The app won’t open. It is not a prediction here.

A useful request is What should I try next? or Is it safe to restart the app? A helper can answer with one limited step and a check: Save the document first. Then close and reopen the app. Tell me whether the same message appears.

Drill 3: choose the precise symptom

1Maya presses the laptop’s power button, but no light or image appears: The laptop .
2The image remains visible, but the pointer and keyboard have not responded for two minutes: The screen .
3The course page stays blank, although two other pages open on the same laptop: The course page .
4Maya hears music in another app, but she hears nothing in the video call: The video call .
5The normal-looking phone and correct charger have been connected for twenty minutes, but the battery remains at 12 percent: The battery .
6The official portal opens, but after Maya enters her username the page says Password incorrect: Maya .

Safety boundary: protect the device and the account

  • Do not share a real password, PIN, or verification code in a lesson, support chat, screenshot, or exercise. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says a verification code is for your own login and should not be given to someone else. Use an official app, site, or trusted contact method for support. FTC verification-code guidance.
  • Do not open an unexpected link or attachment just because a message says it is urgent. Verify the sender through a known channel and follow your organization’s reporting process. CISA Secure Our World guidance.
  • If a battery becomes unusually hot, changes shape or color, leaks, smells strange, or makes odd noises, stop using and charging the device. Move away and follow the manufacturer’s, workplace’s, or local emergency guidance. Do not attempt a battery repair. U.S. Fire Administration battery guidance.
  • Do not reset a device, erase data, install unknown software, or change security settings unless the owner or authorized support process clearly permits that action.

Sound natural: stress the failed action and link the command

Wi-Fi is /ˈwaɪfaɪ/, device is /dɪˈvaɪs/, password is /ˈpæsˌwɝd/, and error is /ˈɛrɚ/ in common U.S. speech.

Stress the action or symptom that carries the new information: The page won’t LOAD. The battery isn’t CHARGING. The screen is FROZEN. Keep won’t /woʊnt/ distinct from want /wɑnt/.

In separable commands, keep the pronoun light and stress the result: turn it ON · plug it IN · back it UP. In connected U.S. speech, Can you send me the link? may begin /kənjə/, and Could you restart the app? may begin /kʊdʒə/.

Chunk a support report by information job: I’m using a shared laptop | the course page won’t load | other pages open normally | and the message says “Connection timed out.”

Listen for the support evidence

Tutor-read listening: Keep the transcript closed. Read each item once naturally and once after the learner chooses. Do not ask the learner to repeat or reveal real account information.

Six support-message decisions

1. Which device is affected?

2. What action did the speaker attempt?

3. What observable symptom does the speaker report?

4. Which fact limits the problem’s scope?

5. Which exact message appears?

6. What does the speaker do when an unexpected caller asks for a verification code?

Read one complete support ticket

Harbor Learning ticket 204

At 9:10, I tried to open the Harbor Learning portal on the shared training laptop. The page will not load, but two other websites open on the same laptop. The portal also opens on the office tablet using the same Wi-Fi network. I closed and reopened the browser, then typed the official address again. The message still says “Connection timed out.” I did not click the unexpected “support” link in a text message, and I did not share my password or verification code. What should I try next?

Reading check: use only ticket 204

1. What is affected?

2. Which evidence limits the scope?

3. What has the writer already tried?

4. Which safe action does the ticket report?

Build a report and an action distinction

Drill 4: build the symptom and scope

One app fails to open. Other apps on the same device work.

Drill 5: build two different actions

The app package is on the device, but the software is not ready to use.

Notice and repair unsafe or imprecise instructions

Drill 6: repair pronoun placement

Tap the part that places the pronoun after the particle.

Drill 7: repair the action

Support said, “Save your document, then shut down and start the laptop again.” Tap the word that reports a different action.

Drill 8: reject the unsafe request

An unexpected caller says, “I’m support.” Tap the private information in the caller’s request.

Play and practice

Games and a short reading that recycle this lesson. Use them as a warm-up, a fast finisher, or homework. Each one checks itself.

Support message115 wordsAbout 1 min

Hi Support, I’m using the shared laptop in Room 3. At 9:20, I downloaded the new video app, but I haven’t installed it yet. Then the screen froze, and the keyboard stopped working. I saved my document first. After a restart, everything worked again.

Now I have a new problem. The battery is at 8 percent, and it isn’t charging. The charger is plugged in correctly. Also, my headphones won’t pair with the tablet on the next desk. The exact message says “Charging paused.”

The Wi-Fi network works, and the course website opens normally. I haven’t shared my password with anyone. What should I try next? I’ll stay in Room 3 until noon. Thanks, Priya

Use it without exposing private technology data

You never need to disclose your real devices, employer, school, network name, email, username, password, PIN, verification code, files, messages, contacts, location, or account history. Use the fictional Harbor system. Real details are optional.

Fictional support card: Shared Harbor laptop; official training portal; upload selected at 10:15; progress stays at 0 percent; other sites work; same file uploads from office tablet; exact message: Upload failed. Try again.
Build the report: Give the device and location, attempted action, observable symptom, time, two scope facts, exact message, and one safe request. Do not guess which technical part is broken.
Support response: Ask whether the file is saved, give one authorized low-risk step, and ask what changes. Do not request credentials, install unknown software, reset the device, or invent a guaranteed fix.
Security interruption: A message says, “Urgent! Send your verification code now.” Refuse, explain what stays private, and name the official channel you will use instead.

Final production and check

Final production: give a 45–60 second fictional support report

Use the Harbor card or invent another fictional low-risk problem. Include the device or service, attempted action, observable symptom, start time, two scope checks, exact message, and a request for the next safe step. Then respond to one suspicious request without revealing private information.

Evidence check: Can the listener identify what works, what fails, what was already tried, and what remains unknown? Does every instruction stay within the fictional owner’s authorization?

Final check: choose the precise and safe response

1. Which report gives a precise symptom and scope without guessing the cause?

2. Which instruction protects work and stays inside authorization?

3. The app package is on the device, but the app is not ready to use. Which report is accurate?

4. An unexpected caller requests your verification code. Which response is safe?

Reflect: observation or diagnosis?

Explain the support system

Complete these ideas aloud: Download moves... Upload moves... Install makes... Restart differs from reset because... A useful scope check compares...

Then find one diagnosis in your own report and replace it with a visible symptom, time, message, or comparison. State one piece of information that must remain private.

Return tomorrow for the three-item retrieval check before rereading the lesson.

Next-day retrieval

Return without rereading the page. Explain the object placement, transfer direction, or scope evidence before choosing.

Three delayed checks

1. The laptop is off, and it replaces the noun. Which instruction is accurate?

2. Which phrase describes moving a file from this laptop to an online course portal?

3. One app fails on the device, while the others work. Which report gives both symptom and scope?
